open source, community and the kerala foss scene - foss-flip

Date : 20-09-2025

so alongside all my solo projects theres a whole community side to what i do, and foss-flip is a good example. its a community-built meme generator that i set up as part of Tinker-Foss for FOSS 2025, the idea being people fork it, contribute features, and climb the tinker-foss leaderboards while learning the open source contribution workflow. its less "my project" and more "a playground for other people to make their first pull requests"

this matters to me because open source is how i learned basically everything. the löve community, random github repos, people documenting their work for free, all of that raised me as a developer. so being on the other side of it now, creating an on-ramp for newer folks to contribute, help me climb ranks, and feel that first "my code got merged" high, feels like paying it forward. im pretty plugged into the kerala foss scene, contributing to the kerala hackclub site, showing up for india foss stuff, organizing little things like this

honestly the community work scratches a totally different itch than building. solo projects are about depth and obsession, community projects are about lowering the barrier so more people get to feel what i feel when something works. and a meme generator is the perfect first project, low stakes, funny, and everyone has an opinion about memes. get people in the door with something silly and suddenly theyre contributing to open source. thats the whole game
